So many people worry about change. The one about how to deal with and manage it. The others how to resist change and re-establishing well-defined order.
Lately, I stumbled upon an article at medium. At first read, I was entertained by a story about calls from the past.
Then, I found myself stuck to the topic. Thinking about again and again.
I could not let it go.
My subconsciousness had a message, it could not deliver.
/dealing with attraction
Every time, I cannot release a thought, I take that as an indicator of importance to me.
As I am practicing meditation once a while, now I am able to let things go.
I usually do not clutch to thoughts and events, anymore.
But, there are some incidents that stick.
That may be some thoughts, articles, or other interactions with people.
The stickiness of these incidents is flagging them to me as “needs additional work done upon”.
In this case, it was the fact that customer #1 and #2 of one person are still using a solution, developed and deployed in the mid-eighties. It was the time, I started my first baby-steps in this “IT-industry” and therefore, I can remember times and stuff 30 years back in time. In my personal environment, there is nothing left of this time except memories and my attraction to filofax – which is analogue, obviously.
I called it “digital transience” – long before expression “digital dementia” was introduced.
In fact, it is different in detail – but that is another story.
So, there is something about change and resistance in this story, I need to dig deeper to finally release from my mind. That’s what I am doing by the following lines.
First lesson to learn was accepting the fact, that there is constant change all around us. You cannot manage, You cannot prevent, You need to accept and deal with that fact.
Sounds easy and self-evident, but took me around forty years of lifetime to start developing a habit to deal with.
I hope, You are faster and further in Your attempts to cope with, dear valued reader.
On the other hand, there are good reasons to keep up with successful practices and established order.
What are the arguments, what are the indicators to judge upon?
Some make it “easy” and ignore everything outside. They tend to life autarkical. It is the scientist in the ivory tower or the hermit in his cave.
But, if You are meshed inside a society, an economic order, a family structure, it’s different.
Some belief, it is their role to play in being consistent and reliable by not changing at all.
Other’s are just ignorant idiots that annoy their fellow people and do not notice and care about.
And then there are Ben and Larry.
From my perspective, they made both wise decisions to keep their solution running as long as possible.
Over the years, they migrated from native MS-DOS into a so called “DOS-BOX” on WINDOWS and later into a virtualized DOS-environment on MAC OS.
They still can do successfully because they operate in a market niche that was manageable, stable and constant throughout the years they operate in.
It is small enough to be uninteresting for bigger players and it was big enough to make a living for those two guys and partially for their relatives.
This fact and the wise decisions to fill it and not to leave their niche is what made them successful on the one hand, but needed the adult and mature decision to stay and constantly keep up their decision to stand the ground.
People like to change, but do not want to be changed.
Change is what You see – what You personally impact and what results from Your activity.
You call it success or failure. It meets Your intention, fulfills aims, satisfies needs, fits to demands, suits to Yourself.
On the other hand, nature, and people around You do this also, all the time.
Their impact to the world erodes safe ground of the building Your Certainty lives in.
You cannot be sure until You assure.

In the last six months, I changed two internet access connections.
First time with great success, second time was different …
/the demand fitting attempt
We used our internet connection at home primarily for checking websites and eMails. The cheapest tariff we got at that time was a 30M download connection.
We had massive other stuff to do with moving into our new home, giving birth to the firstborn and all that stuff.
I just connected an old WLAN Access Point router at hand to the cable modem and that was it for the next 7 years.
Meanwhile we, ahem … well – I bought a Smart TV.
Public TV broadcasts are more nd more available via Internet.
My spouse reduced linear TV watching and intensified asynchronous watching via IP-streaming.
With “one” word: it was time to request the full bandwidth of the internet connection.
My old WLAN-router was capable of something below 10M. Streaming was more and more pain in the a**.
I changed to a rock solid, retro looking Linksys WRT device and everything was very fine at home.
/the other one
Some month later, a friendly representative of DTAG was ringing at my office-door.
I am ignoring Vodafone’s letters that advertise incredible DL-speed for almost nothing, since I moved to this office about 10 years ago.
Now, there is this guy in front of me and I thought by myself “hey, why not?”
I deeply obligated myself to check, whether this will be a good idea and what impact it may have within the 14-days period in which I can cancel these kind of deals with no costs at all (European law).
And time went by.
After two weeks of higher priorities, I lost my internet connection, switched over to my mobile phone, ordered an (insufficient) Access Router (without VDSL modem), grabbed another in presence, exhausted my mobile phones included internet highspeed DL volume and spent more than half a day and a three digit amount of Euros for … ??
- For having no free unlimited access to DTAG’s public hotspots, anymore
- For having no phone connection, anymore
(I did not want to invest another half a day to get it active, yet)
- For having a higher DL-rate compared to that what was already sufficient over a ten years period
I had a “not so good feeling” from the very beginning.
It was not an active decision to aim something. It was more kind of a favor to this unknow young fellow and the company I once worked for in a project that was one required piece to the infrastructure that makes this kind of deals possible.
So, my reasons in second and not so successful attempt were more or less politeness and nostalgia.
Nothing, good deals are built upon.
/how to behave
What did I learn from this?
Do nothing, unless You have a good reason for action.
If You react, ask about reasons as well as when You are acting.
What might those reasons be?
- Gaining ability?
- Gaining knowledge?
- Realize Savings?
- Obtain Safety?
- Improve Security?
- Or just freedom and peace in mind (in sense of “end of annoyance”)?
Every one of these aspects above can be named and measured.
Do it, when You are acting.
Otherwise stay calm, stabilize status quo, and let the clouds go by.
As some of You might know, it takes serenity, courage and wisdom when it comes to change.
Not only active change, but also for active persistence.
So, find a good reason for change.
Otherwise, continue in taking care of status quo.
Once, there was a good reason for establishing it.
It needs a significant better reason for changing.
Everything will be great in the end. And if it is not great, it is not the end.
Repeat up2U-protocol sequence until there is no sufficient need to change, anymore.
Life runs in circles. Some are smaller, some are bigger.
In the end, there is no end – only another beginning.
Enjoy, and share what You like. Feel free to make life great by that!

I want to read of Your thoughts. Comments are appreciated.
